Portuguese horse riding and training
Portugal is located in the south western part of Europe. In the classical times, Portugal, then named Lusitania, was a part of the formidable Roman Empire and therefore was exposed to a lot of influences from diverse cultures like those of the Carthaginians and the Phoenicians as well as the Romans. It was in those primitive times that the seeds of horse riding or equestrian activities were sown in the soils of Portugal. Though the sport is still rooted in tradition, its rigid adherence to the past has not resulted in a decline in its popularity.

The fine art of training horses and horse riding are very significant in the country of Portugal since historical times. This is because, horses apart from being prominent modes of transportation, were immensely used during battles and warfare and therefore training was very necessary in such cases to ensure victory. Not only the horses, even the riders required to be trained properly to be assured of how to control the animals and also to prevent unwanted accidents. Nowadays equestrianism has emerged as a prominent leisure activity amidst the Portuguese population and therefore there is also a growing interest among the people to learn the pros and cons of horse riding. This has given birth to various horse riding learning schools which provide training to amateur riders. The basic itinerary of the training program includes learning the means of riding carefully and also the importance of dressage and the use of traditional attires and saddles and bridles. In fact the tourism industry has opened up equestrian holiday destinations where the basics regarding the equestrian discipline is taught to those interested. In fact it is surprising to find that a huge proportion of properties on sale in Portugal are exhibited as equestrian properties having beautiful landscape features to lure the customers.
